When Did we stop calling people?

By Dr Sajad Hussein Kamarally

There was a time when mothers and aunties could spend hours on the telephone.“What are you cooking today?”“Who is getting married next month?”“Eh, did you hear about...?”It was innocent gossip. Nothing very important. Nothing that would change the world.

But it made people happy. It made them feel connected. You could hear the laughter, the sighs, the excitement and sometimes even the silence at the other end of the line. There was warmth in a human voice.

Today? We have WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Telegram and so many other ways to communicate. We have everything. And yet, somehow, we seem more disconnected than ever.It has become so easy. So fast. And sometimes, so artificial.A family WhatsApp group may have 100 messages in a day, but hardly a real conversation.

A 👍 here.A forwarded video there.A “Happy Birthday” sticker.A few emojis, that is it.Very convenient. Very efficient. But where is the human feeling?

We used to call.We used to listen. We used to hear the hesitation in someone's voice, the laughter behind a joke, or the sadness that someone was trying to hide.

Today, we type. then we assume, we misunderstand, even misread. And sometimes, without even realising it, we slowly drift apart.

What happened? we became lazy.Texting is easier than talking, or we became busy.“No time to call lah.”Or we became afraid of disturbing people.“What if they are busy?”So we send a message instead.

And then we wait.Somehow, in those few seconds of convenience, something precious can disappear — the warmth of human contact.

Can we go back to the way things were? May be not completely, and may be we shouldn't.

Technology has brought enormous benefits to our lives. It has made communication faster and brought people together across thousands of kilometres.May be we can bring back a little of what we have lost.

Call your father instead of texting him.Call an old friend simply to say, “I was thinking about you.”Call your grandchildren and ask what they ate today — and, more importantly, really listen to the answer.

Technology should bring us closer. It should not push us further apart, because a human voice can carry something that a thousand emojis cannot.

Kasih sayang.

I miss those long telephone calls,I miss hearing people and  sometimes I wonder:When did we stop calling people?

The answer does not matter. What matters is what we do today.

Maybe today is the day we start calling again.
